Below are web sites and activities that will assist students in their development of vocabulary specific to the area of math . Students often struggle with content/curricular specific vocabulary and this page will provide a few tools that will engage students as they work on developing vocabulary in the area of math.

The Math Dictionary web site combines a number of "best practice" ideas into addressing math vocabulary. At the site, students can select from a alphabetized set of math words by clicking on the letter of the alphabet along the left site and then selecting the word from those listed. For each selected word the student gets a definition, a picture and a math game that brings the mathabacus.jpg vocabulary word to life. In the example on the right the word "abacus" was selected--notice the definition at the top, the picture and the interactive game format where students can enter a number to be displayed on the abacus.

Spelling City is a web site that has been around for quite a while and teachers have been using it in the classroom almost as long. Recently, the site has begun adding specialized area--such as a math vocabulary area, where the words and activities are specifically focused on a subject area. Lesson Description:

This math lesson that incorporates 21st century skills and the teaching of math vocabulary is a great example of how vocabulary can be taught in a math classroom using 21st century tools that will enhance the instruction and engage the students. The lesson spends time teaching students about the words and phrases that are used to describe numbers: rational, irrational, prime, etc......Virtual Thesaurus is used to define vocabulary words and visualize word meanings. In the activity, students evaluate numbers and decide how they can categorize them according to their number type.

Materials:
