  • Activity to Try: Create a Word Map. Allow the students to create meanings for words with direction and guidance from the instructor. The tools listed below can be used for ideas and as resources for students when they begin generating their word meanings. Here are some links that provide ideas and could serve as tools for students in creating a "kid friendly" word meaning.
    • Reading Rockets Word Map Strategy:
This site will provide the background needed for helping students create a word map. Most word map organizers engage students in developing a definition, synonyms, antonyms, and a picture for a given vocabulary word or concept. Enhancing students' vocabulary is important to developing their reading comprehension. This site provides examples for a number of curricular areas along with templates and step-by-step directions.
The sample .pdf templates would be a "no tech" way of creating a word map.
    • Lino Sticky Notes:
This site allows the user to create online "sticky notes" that could be used to create a "Word Map" in a more technology related way. This is a free site that a teacher could use to create a "canvas" for a sticky note board where students could create their word map.
